Listening to on , the coverage of the 's "issue" is pretty good so far

I agree, isn't great...I keep using it because of its volume though

Nice to hear them cover @alex's posts that were in my thread as well

@realcaseyrollins @alex I think the hashes are not using an algorithm that makes unique hashes for each image. In order to open the hashes they may also have to open the algo

@thatguyoverthere @alex I completely disagree with that take that getting cheesy pizza is a victimless crime...

@thatguyoverthere @alex

"This is an attack on decentralization"

In hindsight I have to agree that the article from was an exercise in FUD

@thatguyoverthere @alex How come isn't pointing out that some of the they found was though

goes viral on the unmoderated side of the all the time

@realcaseyrollins @alex was it a significant portion? It might not even matter considering the collision / false positive rate.

@thatguyoverthere @alex I did not read the raw study but heard that it made up for at least part of it. If it was less than 95% of the cheesy pizza they found, I would be genuinely shocked.

Once you're on , it's all the way down

@realcaseyrollins Explaining this in more detail is a pita but there is one specific instance (which has been specifically criticized for it's moderation lately) where they potentially found a tiny amount of it (although, we have to use the word potential, because these algorithms have false positive rates and the guy didn't look at the images for legal reasons).

But, it's tiny compared to the size of the instance. It's an exaggeration, especially when you consider that Big Tech is far worse.

So, maybe, they need to do better moderation or something, but it's clearly a hit piece.

I kinda got the same impression, and it hits harder knowing that journos have a hard time getting used to mastodon as a whole. Their twitt- er, X addiction means they weren't bound to stick around long. There's just not enough people for massive 'going viral globally' reach.

I don't really know what the end goal is at this point since they shit talk twitter all day too. My personal take is this is to weaken decentralization since the entire article brings up The Moderating Question, which mastodon users think requires a tribunal and court. See: Oliphant and their council for making blocklists, complete with gay reddit tier star wars references.

At the end of the day I would love to be able to auto block and not worry about CP or loli on my server. And there definitly is a CP and loli "problem", but it appears anywhere that linux users and anime fans intertwine online. Still, the entire article screams "won't somebody think of the children?" foot in the door. Even the subject matter is made so it's near impossible to "defend" open federation. Oh, you want to promote child porn?

I see what you did there 😏

@realcaseyrollins @alex yeah I think it's a complicated issue. I think technically speaking copying a file is victimless (similar thinking to piracy), but there is harm both in the possibility that sharing those kinds of photos can create an incentive for abuse and the fact that the person who is being abused is having their abuse and shame shared with a larger group which I would imagine can be even more psychologically harmful than if it stays private.
