another example of how people outside of the Mastodon echo chamber think of Threads:

know how social media like Reddit and Tumblr are made fun of for their groupthink? Mastodon and the Fediverse has its own groupthink.
the video mentions Mastodon in passing but says the name sounds like a joke. and yeah, Threads is a much better name. kind of wish Mastodon wasn't named Mastodon. never liked the name. FOSS software in general tends to have ugly names.
@thor I'm a few minutes in...does he not know that you can pay to be verified on #Instagram?

@realcaseyrollins as with most YouTube videos, i'm sure there are inaccuracies, by the way, but this is a pretty mainstream YouTube channel. he has more followers than there are accounts on Mastodon...
@realcaseyrollins he talks about tech but he does so in a very approachable way. you could send his videos to your non-geeky friends and they'd be able to follow just fine.
@thor True! I watched some of his videos but found a lot of them not particularly engaging. Maybe that's why.
@realcaseyrollins it's closer to actually having a nice name, although i will say that "soapbox" doesn't carry the best of connotations. most examples in dictionaries are kind of negative.
