@kreyren Yep, it sucks that and don't use cached media like does. The network sees me use social.teci.world and see queries to dozens of different sites, but if I use social.freetalklive.com, they just see that one instance.

Pleroma can be configured to do it too, it just requires a beefier server than most of us are willing to pay for lol (plus the potential liability of caching an illegal image on your server)

@ademan @kreyren

> (plus the potential liability of caching an illegal image on your server)

Ah yes because this concern never occurs with lol

> it just requires a beefier server than most of us are willing to pay for

Does it require more powerful hardware than would?

Ah yes because this concern never occurs with #Mastodon lol

Just because they don’t think about it, doesn’t mean they’re not liable… a lot of things go unenforced, or selectively enforced. If you’re even moderately dissident I recommend avoiding things like that.

Does it require more powerful hardware than #Mastodon would?

No idea, I think poa.st is the largest Pleroma instance and graf had to invest quite a bit into hardware, so it’s very possible. Pleroma makes it possible to run on very modest hardware, but it may have different scaling properties as user counts inscrease.

@realcaseyrollins @kreyren @realcaseyrollins @ademan @kreyren I have no idea. Poast was on mastodon until we hit 1200 active users which absolutely decimated it on the hardware we had it on.

we have always mediaproxied everyone's media except ones which regularly host borderline illegal content which are listed on our about page. everything else is cached but we also have multiple AMD EPYC servers and multiple 10gbps uplinks

@graf @kreyren @ademan

> Poast was on mastodon until we hit 1200 active users which absolutely decimated it on the hardware we had it on.

Ah so you switched to for largely performance-based reasons?

@realcaseyrollins @kreyren @realcaseyrollins @kreyren @ademan when you have dozens of people posting WEBM files at the same time on hardware that has less than 8 dedicated cpu cores it becomes unreachable.

mastodon stops what it's doing to transcode files to be more 'web friendly' (friendly to iToddlers who's devices still don't fully support WEBM a decade later). each one of those WEBM uploaded the server transcodes using ffmpeg which uses, at minimum a single thread each file. multiply that by a dozen or more and mastodon becomes crippled and no longer responds to queries

we switched to pleroma for that
soapbox was a welcome addition i found out about after the fact while trying to migrate our database
@realcaseyrollins I swear I was just thinking about you earlier, wondering where you went! Then you showed up in my notifications like magic. lol

@MandyJane Haha very cool! I wonder how I popped into your notis tho

Yeah my main account @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world is on a instance so it doesn't proxy media, and spams my campus internet with requests to load images from instances they block...and they started to notice. So I'm using this instance until I'm off campus and then I'll be back on my main.

@realcaseyrollins @realcaseyrollins You showed up in my notifications because you liked my post about people leaving Twitter.

Hope everything is great at school!

@MandyJane @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world That's so cool! Forgot to follow you from this account, I suppose.

Not everything is great, but almost everything! I am truly blessed!

Maybe you can put in a feature request with @alex for some workaround (eventually). He's got to spend all his time on groups right now.

@polarisera @alex @realcaseyrollins@social.teci.world @MandyJane From what I've heard it's something configurable you can add to your instance. I'd have to ask @curtis to enable it but IDK if his server has the capacity to do that...it already went down once before because the hard drive ran outta space lol

@Leyonhjelm Thanks! I wish worked more reliably on PC and was compatible with and and , or otherwise I would have switched to it full-time by now

@realcaseyrollins

I don't miss campus blocking issues from when I went back to college for a while. It was pretty silly.
@realcaseyrollins Girls were leeching wifi at mcdonalds to buy new underwear. Like regular everyday stuff. Which is kind of worse than doing it from the privacy of your housing.
@realcaseyrollins

Yeah. It was pretty shocking. They also tried to block gaming of any kind

@Leyonhjelm Yeah nowadays evading that stuff is dirt simple
