@Rasp Well, that's how insurance works if you don't read the terms beforehand. Do people seriously not check a plan's coverage before signing up for insurance?

@realcaseyrollins @Rasp insurance is normally profitable by covering the higher risk userbase with the lower risk userbase's premiums
health insurance is unique in that while there is a permanently at higher risk population (people with chronic illnesses), the lower risk population (young and healthy people) eventually turn into a higher risk population (the elderly)
this puts health insurance in a unique position where they function like a ponzi scheme and needs continuous population growth and signup to remain profitable
because this is is not achievable, they try extra hard even by insurance standards to never cough up the money
this is why healthcare can never be successfully privately insured even if you are a fan of neoliberalism

@mer @realcaseyrollins

Free Universal healthcare is the only way to put these fraudsters out of business for good.

@Rasp @mer If what we're looking for is high quality healthcare, universal healthcare isn't even an option

@Rasp @mer If you fund it properly then the same amount of money will be spent overall on it. The cost would technically be spread out amongst everyone, but taxes would be increased to a point so high that no one would support it, especially if they don't use the healthcare system particularly frequently.

I'm not sure how many people are chomping at the bit to have a chunk of money taken out of their paycheck in the middle of a bad economy in order to pay for somebody else's medical bills.

@realcaseyrollins @Rasp Wrong.
Private healthcare is a private business, money is siphoned to investors. The presence of a pareto rent means it will always cost more than public healthcare.

you do know what progressive taxation is right?

@mer @Rasp I know what progressive taxation is, and I hate it. We should only have a national non-cash sales tax, with zero exemptions.

The government should only make more money when the citizens make more money.

@realcaseyrollins @Rasp
>The government should only make more money when the citizens make more money.
that is literally what progressive taxation is, you are contradicting yourself
@realcaseyrollins @Rasp
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_tax
>A progressive tax is a tax in which the tax rate increases as the taxable amount increases. The term progressive refers to the way the tax rate progresses from low to high, with the result that a taxpayer's average tax rate is less than the person's marginal tax rate.
who taught you to say stupid shit like that? stop listening to podcasts and read any book like ever
en.wikipedia.orgProgressive tax - Wikipedia

@mer @Rasp I know what taxes are, the irony of you sending me a #Wikipedia article with your apparently poor level of reading comprehension is hilarious

@realcaseyrollins @Rasp right, you're just gonna call the sky yellow there's no reason to talk to you
you're too far gone

@realcaseyrollins @mer

No it wouldn't the cost has been calculated MANY times and you could easily siphon it off from the military with absolutely no impact to its operation. Net 0% tax increase

@realcaseyrollins @mer Because they already have more than they could possibly need we could cut the budget 66% and still be spending more than any other nation on earth

@Rasp @mer Why would we cut the budget 66%? Is it bad to spend money on the military?

@realcaseyrollins @mer Yeah cause they aren't doing jack shit. And shouldn't be.

@Rasp @mer Okay that's fair. I'm pro military but it seems like we've gone stagnant lately. Any weapons we make are going to #Ukraine, and we're running out of them.

I mean, I do think they should be building up weapons. I think the military should take a far more defensive approach than it does, but we need to build up our military in the same way that #Israel does, so I don't agree with the "shouldn't be" part of your statement here.

@realcaseyrollins @mer

I just thing the people are a MUCH better investment than lining the pockets of military contractors who do fuck all.

@Rasp @mer Well, the problem is that the contractors are doing nothing.

The military (is supposed to) defend the citizens and keep them safe, so it is a people investment if done correctly.

@realcaseyrollins @mer but all this proxy war bullshit is doing NONE of that and the amount we're spending is ludicrous and just lining the pockets of the military industrial complex.

I'd be fine playing soliders and generals but we've been paying so much to fat cat war profiteers when there is NO WAR on.

@realcaseyrollins @mer My ideal would be trimming the fat doing good stuff that helps people and giving a tax cut to the average joe if we have a surplus afterward.

I think we could do it.

@Rasp I think the government is just way too big, there's likely a ton of wasted money and that brings citizens' income after taxes down. I actually have a radical plan to take the vast majority of government departments and auction them off to private interests, using the money to go towards the national debt.

The reason for my tax position is twofold; firstly, it would cut down on tax evasion, and secondly, the richest people don't usually pay taxes due to tax exemptions, because they run businesses. While it's great that they run businesses, that's a huge missed opportunity for income. And with only a sales tax, the government is either rewarded or punished for having policies that help or harm the economy.

But also, we REALLY need to stop printing money man.
